For security reasons, the language and terms used to describe the situation in Syria must be precise and specific. This ensures that the war crimes and context of the conflict are understood in their complexity, and that future courses of action such as ‘the right to know’, and justice and accountability, can be pursued. With this in mind, the Ayouni film team use terminology that is specific to these war crimes, and ask that writing around the film does the same. Our film specifically portrays people who have been ‘forcibly disappeared’ or are victims of ‘enforced disappearance’. We do not use the word ‘missing’. We use the term ‘detainment’, and ‘detainees’ rather than ‘prisoners’ because many are arbitrarily detained. The great majority of people are detained and disappeared by the Syrian regime, but armed opposition groups and extremist groups like Daesh are also guilty of detention and disappearance.

We refer to the situation in Syria as a ‘conflict’ or a ‘war’; a ‘revolution’ or ‘uprising’. We do not refer to the conflict in Syria as a ‘civil war’, as this dangerously misinterprets the situation in Syria.

Please note: Bassel Safadi was taken into regime custody on March 15th 2012, then he was forcibly disappeared and executed on 5th October 2015. Paolo Dall’Oglio was kidnapped in Raqqa on July 23rd 2013, most probably by Daesh.

وعلى هذا الأساس، يستخدم فريق فيلم عيوني المصطلحات الخاصة بجرائم الحرب هذه، ويطلب أن تفعل الكتابة حول الفيلم الشيء نفسه. يصف فيلمنا الأشخاص الذين "اختفوا قسرًا" أو ضحايا "الاختفاء القسري"، على وجه التحديد. لا نستخدم كلمة "مفقودين". كما أننا نستخدم مصطلح "معتقل" و "معتقلون" بدلًا من "سجناء"، لأن الكثير منهم اعتقلوا على نحو تعسفي. النظام السوري هو من اعتقل وأخفى الغالبية العظمى من الأشخاص، لكن جماعات المعارضة المسلحة والجماعات المتطرفة مثل داعش مدانة أيضًا بالاعتقال والاختفاء

نشير إلى الوضع في سوريا على أنه "صراع" أو "حرب"؛ "ثورة" أو "انتفاضة". ولا نشير إليه بوصفه "حربًا أهلية"، لأن هذا يسيء تفسيره على نحو خطير
